The Grand Hotel has its roots deep in Wanganui history. It dates to 1927 and was the place to be back in the day. Unfortunately, due to the great depression on the thirties the hotel did not stay in the hands of the original owners Mr Spriggen’s for long. The Grand Hotel was first named The Spriggen’s hotel and was then later re named The Grand Hotel, and at some point, in the sixties The Grand International. As with the change of name the hotel has also seen a change of owners over the years but has stood the test of times.
In 2004 Neville Gorrie took a leap of faith and bought the hotel which at that point had gone belly up. Over the years Neville put his heart and sole in to the hotel and breathed new life into the hotel. As a result, The Grand Hotel is still seen as a beacon of history and is lovingly referred to as the Grand Old Lady of Wanganui.
What adds to the history of the hotel, as with change of owners, names and changing times the hotel has seen a few changes too. In the seventies a new section was built on to the hotel known as wing, which added more bedrooms to the hotel. In the sixties they did away with the washrooms and all the original rooms were converted to ensuite rooms. In its day this was a big affair and after renovations were completed, the hotel was reopened with great pomp and circumstance, by the Prime Minister of the day. It is also believed that the young Queen Elisabeth II stayed at the hotel on a trip to New Zealand.
Currently the hotel has 50 rooms which gives guests a choice of the old-world charm or a choice of a bit more modern feel in the wing rooms, which all have their own balconies.
What also sets the hotel apart from other venues around Wanganui is, the fact that we have two restaurant outlets, The Grand Irish Pub and Breakers Café. This means that you don’t have to leave the hotel to go and get a “cold one” or get some hearty food. If you don’t want to leave your room our friendly staff could bring your food to your room.
If you want to arrange a wedding, birthday, sports tour or a corporate function, we have the function rooms that can cater for these and with ease book your guests into the hotel for their stay.
For the motorbike or bike enthusiast we have the facility to store the bikes overnight in our large lock-up garage.
The hotel is very central in location to place like Cooks Gardens sport stadium, great shops down Victoria Avenue, the river and historical sights, which mean you can easily walk to all these places while taking in the beauty of the town.
